RSS/SCU Newsletter no.20 September 2004

This an interim letter to bring some of you up-to-date with recent events.

Some of you will have heard about developments at Bletchley Park.

The site is contracting as land is sold for housing and to make money to pay for the increasing costs of staff and running the remaining site.

It is intended to re-vamp the museum but we are putting forward a plea to make a truly SIGINT museum unlike anything in this country of possibly anywhere. Our hope is that the complete story of input to BP, the inside work of BP and then the output. Without the first and last of these BP would have been a pointless waste of money and resources. Some of the original buildings still stand in reasonably good condition and capable of restoration.

English Heritage has surveyed the site in great detail, producing a report of 22 pages which clearly sets out the function of each department. It includes the locations of Oliver Strachey's hand-cipher deciphering sections. This was of course of importance in revealing the worth of the RSS intercepts in addition to the Enigma intercepts. The report in full and in short form may be seen at www.english-heritage.org.uk/bletchleypark/

I have been preparing a longer version of the RSS talk that I gave at the last reunion. This will be presented at BP on the 28th October commencing at 19:30.

The date for a reunion next year has not been fixed yet but I will let you know as soon as it is.

Bob
